One of my new years resolutions was to take my walking a bit more seriously. We are advised that we should be aiming to complete around 10,000 steps a day. That's easy I thought to myself, I must do that everyday just walking around the office from meeting to meeting as I do.
I've got an app on my 'phone that purports to be a pedometer and as I carry the damned thing around with me wherever I go (one of the perils of being such a popular person), I enabled the app.
Here are the statistics from the 16th December onwards when started my Christmas leave, I returned to work on the 3rd January.

That's right folks, first the highlights. In 25 days I've walked over 160 miles (based on the assumption that one of my strides is approximately 3 feet and that there are still 1760 yards in an imperial mile), that's an average of 6.5 miles a day (or 11,355 steps). I've made 283,863 steps and burned 20,263 calories (according to my pedometer).
I quite enjoyed the 23rd December, that was our Christmas food shopping day and did we walk, yes we did...around three different supermarkets just to get everything we wanted - and then carried the shopping home - none of this driving around to the corner shop malarkey for us. It's likely that I burned more than 1,230 calories that day because of the weight training I was doing!
But what really surprised me was how little walking I do during the business day, I had convinced myself that I was walking well in excess of 10,000 steps/day. So I was concerned to discover that I wasn't even achieving 5,000 steps. So I've had to revise my new years resolution and I'm now catching up on the missing 6000 or so at the beginning and end of each working day.
On a slightly different note, I'd been making the pate recipe with defrosted chicken livers, this weekend I found some fresh chicken livers - and I can thoroughly recommend using the fresh over frozen - a completely different taste
Those 10,000 steps are hard to do if you are not on your feet throughout your working day. I'm retired so have enough time to make sure, usually it is well over the recommendation.
ReplyDeleteA walk before and after work is the way that some manage to do it.
Impressive stats Carbo, well done.
ReplyDeleteVery impressive Carbo, I'm lucky if I can get thousand in a day myself. :-(
